From Ordinary to Extraordinary: Unleashing Your Inner Creativity as a Designer

From Ordinary to Extraordinary: Unleashing Your Inner Creativity as a Designer

Dear designers,

Do you have trouble sharing your design work because of a lack of clients, ideas, time, or fear of negative feedback? You are not alone. These are common excuses that designers make, but they do more harm than good.

Let’s go through these excuses one by one:

  • I don’t have clients” – If you don’t have clients, create a project that showcases your skills and abilities.
  • I don’t have a job” – If you don’t have a job, use your time to create new work. This way, you can share it with potential employers.
  • I can’t because of NDA” – If you can’t share your work because of a non-disclosure agreement, use a similar project as inspiration to create something that demonstrates your skills.
  • I refuse to do free work or practice” – Refusing to do free work or practice will only lead to irrelevance. Training is essential for improving your skills, and doing free work can lead to paid opportunities.
  • I don’t have any ideas” – If you don’t have any ideas, start brainstorming. Write down anything that comes to mind, even if it seems silly or unrealistic.
  • I don’t have time” – If you don’t have time, prioritize your work and schedule time to create and share your work.

The only excuse that matters is fear of sharing your work. It’s scary to put your work out there, and designers can be critical. But remember, design is subjective, and you can’t please everyone. Don’t let others’ opinions hold you back.

Receiving feedback means you’re getting noticed, and that’s better than not sharing your work at all. Take constructive criticism, and permanently block or mute the hate.

Remember, every day that goes by is someone else getting the opportunity that could have been yours. Don’t let excuses hold you back from sharing your work and achieving your goals. No one else is to blame for your excuses. It’s time to stop making bad excuses and start creating work to share.

So, what are you waiting for?

Share your work and show the world what you’re capable of as a designer.
